It’s sad that these types of stories still exist in this day-and-age, but they do, and we’re hoping that by presenting this story, one day the ignorance will stop.

While the #14 Miami Central Rockets (Florida) showed a national television audience how good that can be in 2014 by beating #2 Hoover (Alabama) 24-21 on the field Saturday, off the field, Rockets head coach Roland Smith had to deal with a racist letter that was written to him and his team.  Smith told Local10.com that the letter, that was postmarked from Birmingham, Alabama , contained racist insults, but not threats.

The letter became public before the game and the Hoover Athletics Department responded with the following statement: “”As we get closer to tomorrow’s game, we are aware of the disturbing letter sent to the staff at Miami Central.  Police continue to trace the letter’s origins as part of their investigation.  In the meantime, our focus remains on preparations for Saturday’s matchup.”
