The Head Football Coach will organize, coordinate, and promote a comprehensive program of football that is designed to meet the needs and interests of the school community. Additionally, the Head Football Coach will coordinate athletic programs in specified sports.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Management
- Plan, organize, and implement the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules, and proper conditioning of the game
- Ensure safety of participants by inspecting facilities and equipment and being aware of environmental conditions
- Develop a public relations program to keep the public informed of the accomplishments and endeavors of the football program
- Ensure compliance with all University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules and regulations
- Assist the Athletic Director in making football and other sports schedules and in preparing weekly game reports
- Make weekly grade checks on all football players
- Plan and coordinate athletic awards banquets
- Assume responsibility for the behavior of football players while involved in the football program
- Secure game officials for varsity home games
- Communicate with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the public, sharing information about the football program and encouraging student participation in various campus activities
- Utilize and maintain football equipment
- Communicate with campus administration and Athletic Department on the hiring of all head and assistant coaches
Supervisory Responsibilities
- May supervise one or more employees
- Assign, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the work of assistant football coaches
Qualifications
Qualification Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree
- Master’s degree preferred
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification
- Minimum of 5 years of experience coaching at the varsity level
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as coordinator preferred
- Thorough knowledge of UIL rules and regulations
- Thorough knowledge of football game rules, skills and procedures appropriate for high school age students
- Ability to teach rules, skills, and procedures of the game
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, staff, faculty, parents, and the public
- Ability to use and maintain football game equipment

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
Additional Information
- Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors in varying climate and weather conditions
- Activities include demonstrating football skills and techniques, walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting and/or carrying equipment weighing less than 40 pounds
- Hazards include working with groups of high school age students as they participate in a physically active contact sport
