One of the best high school football coaches in Texas high school football history is calling it quits.
Due to his ongoing battle with Multiple Sclerosis, Sam Harrell coached his final high school football game Thursday, a 42-7 win over Corsicana. The victory closes-out a 4-6 year for the 68-year old legendary coach.
Harrell took over the Ennis program in 1994, leading the program to state championships in 2000, 2001 and 2004. In 2009, Harrell had to step-down after being diagnosed with MS. However, he was able to return to the sidelines in 2018.
As his illness progressed, Harrell was forced to coach from a scooter.
Thursday night’s win gives Harrell a record of 205-79 during his time at the helm of the Ennis program. Including his four years at Reagan County, his lifetime mark is 241-87
Coach Harrell was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
