Louisiana moves high school sports summer workouts back to June 8

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association executive committee has voted unanimously to move its summer workouts back to June 8. Under LHSAA rules, football workouts and other sports could have started on Sunday.

Many had been hoping that workouts would begin this weekend, because today marks the start of Phase I of Governor John Bel Edwards’ plan to reopen the state from the coronavirus pandemic. Phase II of the reopening begins June 5.

Football is not covered under Phase II of the governor’s proclamation. Phase I and II cover “limited contact sports” that include baseball, bowling, cross country, cheerleading, golf, powerlifting, swimming, tennis, volleyball and weightlifting. Phase I only allows group’s of 10 individuals, including adults. Phase II increases the limit to 25 individuals.

When Phase III is reached, students can engage in contact sports within their static group, according to a LHSAA memo that outlines safety measures. Phase III will allow groups of 50 people.
