In attempt to help the eight largest high school football programs avoid bye weeks, the Maine Principals’ Association has approved a plan that allows countable cross-border games against New Hampshire high school football teams. The eight teams — Bangor, Bonny Eagle, Edward Little, Lewiston, Oxford Hills, Sanford, Scarborough and Thornton Academy — are members of Class A, the state’s largest classification.

Under the plan, each of Maine’s Class A football teams may play one game against a Division I opponents from New Hampshire, beginning with the 2022 season. This will give the Maine team’s a nine-game regular season.

Up until this point, interstate games were considered exhibition games and didn’t count toward the team’s overall record.

Since the plan was just approved, we’re still waiting to hear if any Maine-New Hampshire games have been placed on the schedule.

Supporters of the new plan believe it will eliminate the need for Class A teams to play Class B teams.
