Manitou Springs defense rose to the occasion on Friday in Colorado’s Spring 2021 2A state championship game against Flatirons Academy.
Trailing 31-30, Flatirons decided to go for two and the win at Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mustangs defense stuffed Flatirons’ 2-point run attempt, which gave Manitou Springs its first state title since 1990.
It was quite a turnaround for the Mustangs, who in 2019 won only two games. Then, last fall, Manitou Springs had to opt out of Colorado’s fall season and had to petition the Colorado High School Activities Association to play in the spring.
