Mars Hill Bible beat Houston County 50-43 in a high-scoring Alabama Class 3A high school football championship game Thursday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.
MHB quarterback William Mann scored the game-winning touchdown midway through the 4th quarter when he scampered 75-yards.
“The coaches called the perfect play,” said Mann to AHSAA.com. “No one saw it coming. I was just fast enough not to get caught. I could feel them about to catch me.”
The two teams combined for 49 points in the fourth. The two almost accounted for 1,000 yards of total offense – 501 for Houston Academy and 486 by Mars Hill.
Mars Hill Bible (14-1) has now won three state titles in three different classifications since 2018 – winning the 1A title in 2018, the 2A title in in 2020. Houston Academy fell just short of winning its first state title after advancing to the championship game for the first time since 1973.
