Liberty North High School‘s freshman football team is likely to get a lot a media attention when it plays its first game this fall thanks to 14-year old Brooke Liebsch, who could be the team’s starting quarterback.
According to Fox4KC.com, Liebsch isn’t a gimmick, she has already played six years of Pop Warner football.
In the WDAF-TV report, Liebsch said, “I used to play soccer and I didn’t like it. Then, one day, I caught a football and I’m like, I want to play football. Let’s go. Girls can do anything a guy can do. Girls can be just as strong as a guy. There’s a lot of them that play football.”
USA Football reports that over 1,700 girls played high school football in 2014 at 448 schools.
Back in 2012, Erin DiMeglio made national headlines when she became the first Florida girl to take snaps in a varsity game while she was a senior at South Plantation High School. On September 21, 2012, she completed his first pass on her second attempt of the game.
DiMeglio’s career began as the starting quarterback for the school’s state champion flag football team.
Before the start of the season, DiMeglio talked about her journey with us on the High School Football America Radio Show that you can listen to below.
Making headlines in 2011 was Andrea Marsh of Panama High School in New York, who was one of 12 finalists for the High School Rudy Award. The 5-8 defensive back led her league in interceptions during her senior season and was also named one of the team’s four captains.
Marsh, who is now playing college basketball at Westminster College, appeared on the January 5, 2012 High School Football America Radio Show to talk about her achievements on the gridiron and being nominated for the High School Rudy Award.
