Mount Airy wins 7th overall North Carolina high school football state championship

Mount Airy beat Tarboro 20-7 Saturday for North Carolina’s Class 1A high school football championship. It’s the Granite Bears first title since 2008, but their seventh overall.

Tyler Mason carried 23 times for 139 yards. He scored all three Bears touchdowns on his way to being chosen as the 1A State Championship Game Most Valuable Player. 

Mount Airy finishes 15-1. Tarboro, which was playing in its sixth straight state championship game, wraps up 13-2.

The game was played at North Carolina State’s Carter Finley Stadium.
