New Jersey high school football coaches passes away during surgery

The Ramapo football program and the community are mourning the loss of head coach Drew Gibbs. According to school officials, Coach Gibbs, who was 59, passed away due to “complications from an aortic dissection and complications from surgery.”

Media reports indicate the Coach Gibbs collapsed Monday night during Ramapo’s practice for this weekend’s sectional championship game against Northern Highlands. Ramapo is currently ranked No. 22 in the High School Football America New Jersey Top 25, powered by NFL Play Football.

Since taking-over the Ramapo program in 2001, Gibbs led the school to seven sectional championships and the last two Group 3 regional titles. His overall record at Ramapo was 183-51.

There no word on whether Friday’s Group 4, North 1 title game against No. 12 Northern Highlands will be played as scheduled.
