With the retirement of Tony DeMatteo last week, the top spot on New York’s all-time high school coaching victories list is safe for now. DeMatteo, who was the head coach at Somers and Roosevelt, steps down four wins shy of Howie Vogts’ record of 364 wins.

Of the Top 25 on the state’s all-time wins list, only two coaches are still active. Rye’s Dino Garr will head into the fall season with 320 victories, which puts him No. 4 on the all-time list. The other active coach on the list is Freeport’s Russ Cellan at No. 19 with 246 victories.
