The biggest hurdle for Mater Dei (California) in its drive for a fourth High School Football America national championship comes Friday night. The top-ranked Monarchs will travel to No. 6 St. John Bosco (California) for their annual Trinity League showdown.

These two began the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Preseason HSFA 300, powered by NFL Play Football. The two flip-flopped positions in late August. Bosco, the defending national champ, held the No. 1 ranking until a surprising 30-23 loss to Hawaii’s Kahuku on September 16.

These two national heavyweights have won five of the last six HSFA national championships. Mater Dei won titles in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Aside from last year’s title, SJB also won the ’19 crown.

As far as the 2023 national championship chase, Mater Dei realizes that while Friday night’s game is huge, it also knows there could be another matchup with the Braves down the road in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Four times since 2016, the Monarchs and Braves have met twice in the same season. Each time, the winner of the regular season game has lost in their playoff matchup.
