Three-time High School Football America national champ Mater Dei is in position to win its fourth national crown since 2017. Saturday night, the Monarchs, No. 1 in the High School Football America 300, powered by NFL Play Football, rolled to a 35-0 win over No. 25 Serra (San Mateo) that all but wraps-up the 2023 national championship. Our final national rankings will be released Sunday, December 17.

The Mater Dei defense was outstanding in last night’s Open Division championship game. And, Stanford-bound Elijah Brown closed-out his scholastic career with four touchdown passes, to four different receivers, at Saddleback College.

Brown, who has been a starter since his freshman year, was 17-of-22 for 298 yards. He finishes his career 42-2 as a starter. The only losses came against arch-rival St. John Bosco.

The defense pitched its fifth shutout of the year. The Monarchs only allowed 59-yards in total offense.

The only area where the Monarchs had issues was with penalties. They had 16 flags thrown against them for 150 yards.

This was the third straight year that Serra reached the Open Division title game, but all three have ended the same way. The Padres lost to Mater Dei 44-7 in 2021. They lost to St. John Bosco 45-0 last year.
