8-man high school football isn’t recognized as an official sport in Ohio, but the state’s football coaches association wants to make sure the schools playing the sport have a chance to play for a state championship.
The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association has announced that it will hold a championship game for 8-man teams in 2023. Right now, only the Northern 8 Conference plays 8-man football. But, this move could open the door for other schools with small numbers of players to switch from 11-man.
The Northern 8, which began playing 8-man football in 2020, includes Danbury, Holgate, McKinley, St. Mary Central Catholic, Sebring, Stryker and Toledo Christian.
