Senior kicker Gio Oceguera booted four field goals for Port Neches-Groves to lead Indians to a 20-17 upset of two-time defending 5A Division II state champ South Oak Cliff 20-17. SOC entered Saturday’s championship game at AT&T Stadium ranked No. 34 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.

Saturday’s championship game was a rematch of the 2022 title game between the two. SOC won last year’s title 34-24.

Oceguera’s four field goals is a Texas high school football championship record.

The state title is the first for PNG since 1975.

South Oak Cliff was trying to match 21 other Texas high school teams to three-peat.
