Recap of opening weekend of high school football in Hawaii

The games are counting in Hawaii as the 2022 high school football season opens this weekend off the mainland. Hawaii is the only state in the nation playing regular season games.

Saturday

Defending Open Division champ Kahuku opens 2022 with a 49-0 shutout of No. 6 Kamehameha. The Red Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the Preseason High School Football America Hawaii Top 10, powered by NFL Play Football, were led by quarterback Waika Crawford, who tossed three touchdown passes. Crawford finished the game completing 13-of-20 passes for 195 yards.

Defending Division 2 champ Kapaa, ranked No. 8 in our preseason Top 10, was thumped 41-17 by Aiea. Junior running back Kaimana Lale-Saole ran for 149 yards on just 12 carries with one touchdown.

Geronimo Ulgaran scored the game’s first three touchdowns. The slot receiver caught two touchdown passes, plus had a 64-yard punt return for a score.

Waianae’sTevin Wilbur rushed for four touchdowns in the Seariders’ 26-6 win over Castle.

Damien shutout Kalaheo 53-0. AJ Tuifua tossed four touchdown passes, plus ran for a score.

PAC-5 also opened with a shutout victory. The Wolfpack defense nabbed three interceptions in the 36-0 victory over Pahoa.

Kapolei picked-up its largest victory in school history with a 70-0 win over Kealakehe. The Hurricanes scored on every possession.

Friday Night

Friday night, No. 3 Mililani beat No. 2 St. Louis in a High School Football America Hawaii Top 10 battle. The Trojan defense was outstanding, picking up 11 sacks. Sophomore quarterback Kini McMillan was sharp in the season opener, throwing for 308 yards and four touchdowns.

The win marked the 100th victory for Mililani head coach Rod York, who has led the Trojans for 13 seasons.

The win avenged St. Louis’ 27-25 win in last year’s Open Division semifinals.

Defending Division I champ ‘Iolani opened with a 62-27 win over Kaiser. Quarterbacks CJ Villanueva and Micah Hoomanawanui each tossed two touchdown passes in the victory. Keao Kawaakoa ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders, who started 2022 ranked No. 4 in our statewide rankings powered by NFL Play Football.

No. 10 Leilehua and Kailua battled to a 27-27 tie in the season opener for both teams Friday night. The Mules had to battle back from a 27-8 halftime deficit.

Leilehua QB Krystian Arindain tossed three second half touchdowns. He finished the game completing 21-of-40 passes for 265 touchdowns.

Thursday Night

Farrington opened the 2022 season with a 42-7 win over Waialua. MJ Moreno completed 6-of-8 passes for 200 yards with two touchdowns.
