Texas High School Football Hall of Fame to induct Class of 2022 this weekend

The Class of 2022 will be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame this Saturday in Waco.

The nine inductees are broken-down into decades and coaches. The athletes being honored are Dick Stafford (1959 & Before), Ray Rhodes (1960s), Rodney Allison (1970s), Shea Walker (1980s), Tony Brackens (1990s), and Colt McCoy (2000s). The Eddie Joseph/THSFHOF Coach honorees are John Parchman and Joey McGuire. The Dave Campbell Contributor to the Game Award will be presented to Robert Wilcox.

1959 and before – Dick Stafford, Temple High School

Stafford was a three-year varsity letterman for the Temple Wildcats from 1953 to 1955. He played fullback and safety. After his playing days, he went into the coaching profession, serving 31 years as a coach. In 1979, as an assistant at Temple, he won the 4A state championship.

1960s – Raymond Rhodes, Mexia High School

The future NFL player and head coach played a crucial role in integrating Mexia High School. In addition to playing football at Mexia, Rhodes also lettered in basketball and Track and Field.

After playing seven years in the National Football League, Rhodes became a coach. After years of being an assistant, he became the fourth African-American head coach in the NFL. During the 1995 season, his first as a head coach, Rhodes received the NFL Coach of the Year Award after leading the Eagles into the playoffs with a 10-6 season.

Rhodes won five Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach.

1970s – Rodney Allison, Odessa High School

Allison is considered one of the top quarterbacks to come out of Odessa High School. He was a two-year starter for the Bronchos. As a senior, he was named first-team All-State.

Allison was drafted by the Houston Astros out of high school, but decided to continue playing football at the college level at Texas Tech. He played two seasons professionally in the Canadian Football League.

After retiring, Allison became a college football coach. As an assistant at Southern Mississippi, he coached Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.

1980s – Shea Walker, Port Arthur Jefferson

During his junior and senior season, Walker caught 149 passes for for over 2,100 yards with 17 touchdowns. At Texas A&M, Walker played all four years, finishing with a school-record 1,411 yards receiving.

1990s – Tony Brackens, Fairfield High School

Brackens was considered one of the hardest hitters of the 1990s, which led to him being placed on the University Interscholastic League (UIL) All-Century team.

After racking-up 24 sacks at the University of Texas, Brackens was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons in the NFL. He’s the all-time sack leader for the Jags with 55 sacks. 

2000s – Colt McCoy, Tuscola Jim Ned High School

The future NFL quarterback finished his high school career as the all-time passing leader in Class 2A. The current Arizona Cardinals QB finished just shy of 10,000 yards passing with 116 TDs. Twice, McCoy was named AP All-State Offensive MVP.

This year will be McCoy’s 13th season in the NFL. As a pro, he’s passed for over 7,100 yards and 33 TDs.

Eddie Joseph/THSFHOF COACH – John Parchman, Midland Lee High School and Joey McGuire, Cedar Hill High School

Parchman led the Midland Lee Rebels to three straight 5A state championships from 1998 to 2000. The 1999 team was named national champs by USA TODAY. He compiled a 152-73-1 record in 20 years as a head coach at Frenship, Cisco, El Paso Socorro, Llano and Midland Lee.

In 14 season, McGuire led Cedar Hill to three state championships, including back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. His record with the Longhorns was 141-42.

McGuire is currently in his first year as the head football coach at Texas Tech University.

Dave Campbell Contributor to the Game – Robert Wilcox, Iowa Park stadium announcer

After 72-years as the Iowa Park Stadium play-by-play announcer, he retired in 2019 at the age of 91.
