The Week That Was — Spring Sports Craziness
It has been a crazy spring in Westerner-land. My job is two parts: head football coach and AD. The spring really spreads you thin with AD duties. I have been all over the place. However, it has been fun!
I found myself in Midland two weeks ago for our soccer playoff games. Our Men’s and Women’s had great years! The Women’s team won the district title and advanced to the second round. They return a bunch of starters and should be locked-and-loaded for a deeper playoff run next year. They are fun to watch!
Our Men’s team was district runner-up and advanced to the second round as well. The Westerner’s won their first ever playoff game this year! The most successful season in our history. Great stuff!
Our head soccer coaches Brandt Martin (Men) and Brian Ducas (Women) did one heck of a job this season. They have rebuilt these programs from the ground up. It has been fun to watch.
Other Westerner Sports News:
– Head Coach Bryan Roberts had his Women’s Golf Team qualify for state! The team had a rousing comeback last week and made the cut!
-Softball, led by Head Coach Sheri Culwell, has had a solid season. They knocked off the 4th ranked team in the state yesterday! They are gearing up for a playoff run.
-Baseball has bounced back from a rough start. With only one starter returning from last year’s record breaking squad, Head Coach Steve Ribera has the Westerners at 5-3 in district play and in the thick of the playoff race.
-The Track teams wrapped up their district meet on Thursday. The Men’s team qualified ten for the regional event. The Women’s team placed third and again are going to be well represented at regionals. Men’s coach Adam Rosales and Women’s coach Jason Trook have taken our track teams to new level. It is great to see!
Why am I mentioning all this in the The Turnaround? Well, it’s simple. Success breeds success. Creating a winning culture on campus helps every athletic program and the entire climate of the school. The Turnaround has more to do with than just football. It’s all part of the process.
Winning takes time. The success of every sport helps speed up the process. The atmosphere and climate of LHS is much different. That is a product of having a great coaching staff and everyone buying into the system. LHS is on its way to doing great things in every sport.
Stay tuned!
