Lubbock Westerners HelmetToday is Tuesday. But in the football world I live in, today was Monday. It’s really confusing unless you are a coach, I guess. When the routine is different, we try to make it as normal as we can. Since we play Saturday, today was our Monday practice on Tuesday. Make sense? If not, don’t sweat it. We are professionals.

So today’s workout was all about running through the game plan for the first time. Mistakes happen. It’s the first day of install for crying out loud. We will get better as the week goes. That is a promise. It’s critical that coaches and players understand the importance of being level headed. You cannot blow up on day one of install if things aren’t going well. Just coach through it. Work through it. This team works hard. They want to do well. They are on track to do so. Stay the course, fellas.

That’s all I have to say about that, in my Forest Gump voice.

PERSPECTIVE
Considering what is going on in the world today, it’s important to realize how lucky we all are to coach football in the greatest country on the planet. We are very fortunate. When I hear news of another senseless murder of an American journalist, it makes what went wrong in practice so meaningless. Never lose your perspective.

WE ARE NOT THE SAME
We lost week one. I am disappointed. The kids are too. But do not mistake us for the same old, same old LHS. We will get to where we want to be. We played bad for eight minutes, not forty eight minutes. This team has character and resiliency. We will fight. We will get it right. You read that here first.

HYPOCRISY
This is the biggest form of human behavior that drives me nuts. Be realistic in your goals and expectations. Understand that effort level, energy and mental state vary on a daily basis. We all have bad days , coaches included. Coach through the tough times and remember each and every day that we all have had a bad day as well.

HOW WAS PRACTICE TODAY?
Not bad. It will be better tomorrow. Do not read all this and think it was bad. We will be fine and tomorrow will be a great day!

RANDOMNESS
– I was at both of our middle schools today. The numbers are up and there are some good athletes at both Hutch and Cavazos.
– Yankees. There is nothing left to say other than awful.

Its all I got today. Tomorrow will be a better day. Why? We coach and that is what do!
