When it comes to talent in the state, the University of Alabama does a great job of keeping it in-state.
Of the top sixty-one players (Class of 2023) in the state, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, six have given their verbal commitments to Nick Saban. In addition, the Crimson Tide have picked-up three verbals from the Class of 2024, including overall No. 1 Jaylen Mbakwe, a Clay-Chalkville cornerback.
It’s not just the Crimson Tide keeping players home, in the Class of 2023, Auburn, South Alabama, Troy and UAB have gotten 16 verbals, so far.
Montgomery Carver defensive lineman James Smith, the state’s overall No. 1, is still undecided with 21 college scholarship offers. Alabama and Auburn are on his Top 6 list.

Smith sat-out his junior season after he transferred to IMG Academy (Florida) and then being ruled ineligible after he transferred back to Carver.
The state’s top offensive player is Christopher Vizzina of Briarwood Christian. The 5-star prospect is a Clemson-recruit.
