Trinity League play opened Friday night in Southern California with all six teams ranked between No. 1 and No. 46 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.
Throughout the five-game league schedule, HSFA will give fans a recap of what’s happening in the league that year-in and year-out is considered the toughest and best in America.
How good is the Trinity League? Mater Dei and St. John Bosco have won six of the last seven High School Football America national titles. Mater Dei won titles in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2023. SJB won titles in 2019 and 2022.
It could have been seven-seven, however, there was that thing called COVID that cancelled the 2020 fall season.
Mater Dei improved to 5-0 Friday night with a 40-18 win over No. 41 Santa Margarita, who jumped-out to a 7-0 lead. Oregon-recruit Jordan Davison got the Monarch offense rolling with a 64-yard touchdown run, the first of two scores.
Santa Margarita was playing without head coach Anthony Rouzier, who was put on administrative leave earlier in the week. Former NFL defensive tackle Steve Fifita, the team’s defensive coordinator, took over as head coach.
Mater Dei had to overcome the loss of quarterback Dash Beierly, who was injured in the first half. Backup Daily Clinton tossed two TD’s in relief.
No. 2 St. John Bosco got a win with a backup QB. The Braves beat No. 12 Orange Lutheran 28-24 with freshman Koa Malau’ulu filling in for regular starter Matai Fuiava, who was injured.
After trailing OLu 10-0 at the half, Malau’ulu tossed four second half touchdowns in the win.
In a battle of unbeatens, No. 46 Servite beat No. 36 JSerra 20-7.
After a scoreless first quarter, Servite took a 6-0 lead. JSerra took a 7-6 lead on junior quarterback Ryan Hopkins’ 12 yard run. An 87-yard, 13 play drive led Servite to a 12-7 lead at the half.
