The Week 3 winner of the Houston Texans High School Coach of the Week Award is Wade Miller of Uvalde High School.

This past Sunday, the Texans hosted Miller and his team at its season opener against the Indianapolis Colts. The team wore “Uvalde Strong” decals on their helmets in honor of the 19 children and two teachers who were killed in a shooting there in May.

The Texans paid for Uvalde to make the 280-mile trip to Sunday’s game. Shortly after the shooting at Robb Elementary School, the Texans donated $400,000 to a memorial fund established after the horrific shooting.

Coach Miller has Ulvalde off to a 2-1 start this season.

Below is feature with Coach Miller on HoustonTexans.com.

Coach of the Week: Wade Miller
School: Uvalde High School
Years Coaching: 28

Why I coach: “I coach because I love kids and I love football. I have chosen to stay at the high school level because I feel I can impact more kids when you count 7th grade through 12th grade.”

Most rewarding/fulfilling part of the job: “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing kids grow into responsible, caring adults.”

Most misunderstood coaching profession: “Many people think coaches only care about winning games. While yes that’s important, every good coach I have ever known is a good teacher, wants the best for his or her athletes and wants more than winning to see those athletes be successful adults.”

Important school initiatives: “My coaches and athletes are trying to shine a positive light on our community after the tragic events. We feel like we can help the people of Uvalde heal.”
