Yesterday we updated the High School Football Coaches All-Time Wins List, today we’ll look at the all-time wins by schools.
Valdosta (Georgia), America’s all-time leaders in football victories, will enter 2015 just nine wins shy of 900. The Wildcats all-time record after a 9-2 season in 2014 is 891-216-34. As I pointed-out in yesterday’s coaches’ story, the numbers you’ll see below don’t always match the National Federation of State High School Association’s Record Book, which we’ll discuss later when we get to Pennsylvania schools Mount Carmel and Easton. The bottom line on the list is that, just like the case of the coaches’ list, there are several good historians, who have researched all-time victories, which has led to some discrepancies in the numbers.
I can tell you that all of the sources agree that the numbers for the top four teams – Valdosta (Georgia), Highlands (Kentucky), Male (Kentucky) and Massillon Washington (Ohio) – are the same.
Mayfield (Kentucky) at #5 is credited with 832 wins per the NFHS, but two historians say the number is either 833 or 830. For the purpose of this list we’ll go with the NFHS’ number.
Now to Pennsylvania – Mt. Carmel, the state’s winningest program entered 2014 with 813 wins, according to the team’s website; the NFHS credited the Red Tornadoes with 820 coming into the 2014 season. Easton, according to Pennsylvania historian Randy Wilson, won its 800th game in 2013. The NFHS says that Easton’s total stands at 798 after a twelve win 2014 season. According to Wilson, the Red Rovers have won 813 games, which places them #7 on his all-time wins list.
According to Wilson, Hampton out of Virginia will joined the 800 win club in 2015 with its first victory, however, the NFHS Record book says Hampton only has 774 wins through 2014.
According to the NFHS records, with three wins in 2015 Muskegon (Michigan) will join the 800 win club. The next closest schools to 800, according to the NFHS are: Berwick (Pennsylvania) 780 wins, Little Rock Central (Arkansas) 778 wins and Clinton (Oklahoma) 771 wins.
