Virginia High School Football 2022 State Championship Previews

The 2022 Virginia Class 6 and 5 state championship games will be played Saturday at Old Dominion University’s S.B. Ballard Stadium. The Class 4/3 championships will be played at Liberty University. The other two state title games (1 and 2) will be played at Salem City Stadium.

Below is a preview of the six state title games

Class 6 – James Madison (Vienna) vs. Freedom (Woodbridge) – December 10 at ODU

The Freedom Eagles (14-0) enter the championship game as the state’s all-time leader in points scored in a season. The Eagles have put 924 points on the scoreboard for an average of 66 points per game. That includes a 112-16 rout of Colgan on October 7.

After an 0-3 start, James Madison (11-3) has ripped-off eleven straight wins to advance to the title game. Those first three losses were by a combined total of seven points.

The Warhawks return to the Class 6 title game after losing to Oscar Smith 42-7 last year.

Class 5 – Highland Springs vs. Maury – December 10 at ODU

Highland Springs (14-0) is the No. 1 team in Virginia, according to High School Football America’s rankings algorithm. The Springers are also ranked No. 75 in the HSFA 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.

Last week, Highland Springs edged two-time defending Class 5 state champ Stone Bridge 19-14 to advance to the title game. The Springers are looking for their fifth state title since 2015.

Maury (10-1) has won only one state title. That was in 2019.

The Commodores bring a 10-1 record into the championship game. Their only loss was to North Carolina’s New Bern, which is playing this weekend for North Carolina 4A state title.

Class 4 – Dinwiddie vs. Kettle Run – December 10 at Liberty

This game features two 14-0 teams.

Dinwiddie will be playing for its second Virginia high school football championship Saturday at Liberty University. Kettle Run is looking for its first-ever state football championship.

Class 3 – Phoebus vs. Heritage (Lynchburg) – December 10 at Liberty

Phoebus (14-0) has had an outstanding season that includes a 56-0 rout of two-time defending Class 6 champ Oscar Smith. The Phantoms are currently ranked No. 260 in our national rankings with seven defensive shutouts.

Phoebus is seeking its 10th overall state title. The only time the Phantoms haven’t won in a state championship appearance was in 2018 when Heritage (12-2) beat them.

Heritage is looking for its third state title.

Class 2 – Central (Woodstock) vs. Graham – December 10 at Salem City Stadium

Central is playing in its first-ever state championship game. The Falcons (12-2) advanced to the state semifinal last year.

Graham (14-0) is a three-time Virginia state champ. the G-Men’s last title was in 2018.

Last year, Graham lost to King William in the Class 2 title game.

Class 1 – Riverheads vs. George Wythe – December at Salem City Stadium

Riverheads (11-1) is going after a seventh straight state title. The Gladiators saw their 52-game win streak snapped in September to Lord Botetourt, a Class 3 program.

Riverheads, which moves to Class 2 next year, hasn’t lost to a Class 1 team since the 2015 state title game.

George Wythe (10-3) owns two Virginia high school football championships. The Maroons lost to Riverheads in the ’16 title game.
