Washington high school football coach resigns after several injured during an unsanctioned drill

Mark Smith is no longer the head football coach at Shelton High School in Washington. King 5 reports that Smith resigned while the school conducts an investigation into what is being called an unauthorized tackling drill without pads and helmets during a physical education class in January.

The television station reports that five students were injured during the session that was allegedly conducted by Smith and members of his staff. Below is the state’s report on the incident.

Smith became the Shelton head football coach at his alma mater in 2020. The year before, he led Liberty High School in Peoria, Arizona to a state championship.
