After 24 years as a Fort Morgan coach and administrator, first year Weld Central head football coach Harrison Chisum caught the coaching bug once again. And he has the Rebel football team back on track.
Before last Saturday, Sept. 4, the last victory for the 2A Weld Central football team was on Oct. 25, 2019. They are officially off the slide and back in the win column thanks to a 40-7 victory over Arvada.
Chisum has a championship pedigree from his time at Fort Morgan that he is bringing to Weld Central. From 2007 to 2017, he boasted a 9-6 playoff record, as well as an 83-40 overall mark. In that time frame, the Mustangs made it to the quarterfinals twice, the semifinals twice and even made it all the way into the 3A championship game in 2008, where they came up short to Glenwood Springs.
His fiery mentality and positive attitude has brought new life to the Weld Central football program, and the kids and community are enjoying some quality football. For that reason, Chisum has been named this week’s Denver Broncos high school coach of the week.

Question:Why do you coach?
Chisum: “I coach because I love this game. Coaching gives you a chance to provide something bigger than the game of football. As a coach you provide life lessons through the game of football. You can also provide an avenue to figure out how to face adversity and belong to a football family.”
Q:Why do you coach the way that you coach?
Chisum: “I coach like I was coached by my high school coach. I am a passionate and fiery person and I only know one way to do it.”
Q:What do you think it’s like to be coached by you?
Chisum: “My expectations are high and details to the little things are a priority. I hope my players feel valued and loved. I am tough but at the end of the day I want my players know that I do love them.”
Q: What has been the biggest challenge taking over the Weld Central head coaching job?
Chisum: “The participation numbers was the biggest challenge. The lack of summer attendance in the past and not being a priority has been a challenge.”
Q:What has been the most rewarding part of coaching Weld Central?
Chisum: “I am fortunate to have a program filled with great young men and women that want to be successful. The administration and community support is amazing!”
Q:What was that feeling like getting that first win of the season after playing to a tie in week one?
Chisum: “It was a good feeling knowing that the team last year did not get a win and they worked so hard week one and it ended in a tie. I have never been a part of a tie in all my years of playing and coaching.”
Q:What can a win like that do for your program going forward this season?
Chisum: “Success helps with buy in of the expectations of the program. A win provides confidence and the desire to find more success each day.”
