Most of the NFL Draft experts have LSU quarterback Joe Burrow being the No. 1 overall pick in the first round of Thursday’s NFL Draft. With that as the backdrop, I thought it would fun to look at where every NFL overall No. 1 pick played in high school.

Below you’ll see every No. 1 pick, beginning Jay Berwanger of Dubuque High School (Iowa) in the 1936 NFL Draft to last year’s No. 1, Kyler Murray of Allen (Texas) High School. Murray, who was the High School Football America/NHSCA Player of the Year in 2014, was the third straight No. 1 pick from Texas. Texans Baker Mayfield (Lake Travis HS) and Myles Garrett of (Arlington Martin HS) were the top picks in 2018 and 2017 respectively.

Only two high schools have ever had more than one overall No. 1.

San Antonio’s Thomas Jefferson High also has two No. 1’s — Tommy Nobis in 1965 and Kyle Rote in 1951.

Isidore Newman in Louisiana has had two top picks. Both have the last name Manning. Peyton was selected No. 1 in 1998. Brother Eli was taken first overall in 2004.

Overall, Texas leads the way with 16 all-time No. 1’s. California is second with 12, followed by Alabama with seven. Louisiana and Ohio have had five No. 1’s each.
