The Pro Football Hall of Fame will grow this weekend with seven new members being inducted in Canton, Ohio. After the Saturday enshrinement ceremony, the HOF will have 378 honorees.
This year’s seven-member class is led by two former Florida high school football players — return specialist Devin Hester of Suncoast High School and wide receiver Andre Johnson of Miami Sr. High School. The pair’s induction increases Sunshine State’s representation in Canton to 22 individuals.

Since the first class was inducted in 1963, 38 different states, the District of Columbia and two countries (Canada and Norway) have been represented in Canton.
California leads the way with 41 HOF’ers, followed by Pennsylvania with 40. Texas is third on the list with 33 inductees.

Aliquippa High School in western Pennsylvania is the only school to have three players in Canton. Cornerback Darrelle Revis, a member of last year’s class, is joined by tight end Mike Ditka and cornerback Ty Law.
There are nine schools with two Hall of Famers:
- Crane (Illinois) – NFL co-founder George Halas and Supervisor of Officials Hugh “Shorty” Ray.
- Erasmus Hall (New York) – Raiders owner Al Davis and quarterback Sid Luckman.
- George Washington Prep (Los Angeles, California) – wide receiver James Lofton and halfback Hugh McElhenny.
- Haverford (Pennsylvania) – NFL Commissioner Bert Bell and NFL Films Steve Sabol.
- Jefferson (Oregon) – cornerback Mel Renfro and defensive tackle Arnie Weinmeister.
- Raines (Florida) – wide receiver Harold Carmichael and cornerback Brian Dawkins.
- Roman Catholic (Pennsylvania) – wide receiver Marvin Harrison and Director of Officiating Art McNally.
- South River (New Jersey) – wide receiver Drew Pearson and lineback/center Alex Wojciechowicz.
- Worthing (Texas) – wide receiver Cliff Branch and linebacker Mike Singletary
Now, not every honoree played high school football. For example, Tim Mara, the founding owner of the New York Giants, dropped-out of school at the age of 13 to get a job to help his family. He was a member of the inaugural class.
Then there’s Tim’s son Wellington, who at the tender age of 14 was given 50-percent ownership in the team, along with his old brother Jack. Wellington attended the Loyola School in Manhattan in the early 30’s. However, the school located near Central Park has never had a football program, which isn’t unusual in the city.
Tim and Wellington are two of a dozen New York Hall of Famers.
