With our first 2020 High School Football America 100 powered by BlackMP Living Water being released Sunday, we thought we’d take a look at how things went last night for some of the teams that will appear in our national rankings tomorrow.

We’ll start in Texas where there were several matchups between teams that would have been in our pre-COVID preseason rankings.

Remember, the Preseason High School Football America 100 was scheduled to be released on June 29, but we cancelled its release because so many schedules were impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. With that being said, in August we did show our readers what the Preseason Top 100, that is created with our proprietary algorithm, would have looked like had schedules and seasons not been so dramatically affected by COVID.

Texas led the way in the non-official Preseason Top 100 with fifteen teams ranked nationally.

The City of Denton was primed for the showdown between Denton Guyer and Denton Ryan. Both teams finished the season ranked in our Top 100 last year. Guyer entered Friday night’s game ranked No. 10 in our Texas Top 25, while Ryan, the 2019 Class 5A Division I runner-up, was ranked No. 12.

Using a tough running game, Ryan gained 343 yards on the ground in a 23-20 win over their crosstown rivals. Ke’ori Hicks ran for 170 yards and Texas-recruit Billy Bowman ran for a score and caught a 60-yard touchdown pass. It was the eighth meeting between the two, but the first since 2015.

You can watch the entire game below:

Allen and Atascocita were in our pre-COVID Top 100 at No. 27 and No. 58 respectively. Friday night, Allen improved 2-0 with a 52-27 victory.

Southlake Carroll, ranked No. 2 in the state right now, opened its 2020 regular season against Rockwall-Heath. The Dragons are led by top-ranked junior quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has given his verbal commitment to the University of Texas.

Ewers needed to be in mid-season form in a 72-57 shootout victory over Rockwall-Heath. The two teams combined for 1,292 yards of total offense with Ewers throwing for 384 yards (21-of-27) with five touchdowns. It was his fifth straight game (dating back to last year) with 300 yards or more passing.

In Alabama, Hoover and Hewitt-Trussville are two teams that were in the pre-COVID rankings at No. 45 and No. 53 respectively. Hoover battled back from a 28-16 deficit to edge H-T 29-28.
