If it weren’t for the fact that High School Football America “mythical” national championships are won on September 9th, you could make a case that Friday night’s showdown between top-ranked St. John Bosco (California) and #2 Bishop Gorman (Nevada) is for all the marbles. And, while it will go a long way toward deciding who’s the top team in the nation in 2016, both teams have plenty more hurdles on their schedules after Friday night’s game.
We also need to point-out that there are plenty of other teams that play the type of schedule that can lead to a national title in a season that has seen plenty of teams come-and-go in our national rankings that are based on our proprietary algorithm.
It was another great weekend of Top 25 games that shape this week’s rankings, plus three Top 25 teams lost, including two in the Top 10.
For those that like status quo, the top six teams all won this week, including #3 IMG Academy (Florida), which won an epic 50-49 battle against #24 Corona Centennial (California). IMG is now one of four Florida teams in our Top 10 with Miami Central moving-up three spots to #7, followed by Booker T. Washington at #8 and St. Thomas Aquinas re-entering the Top 10 at #10.
The biggest mover this week is North Carolina’s Mallard Creek, which hops from #17 to #11 after its win over Byrnes from South Carolina.
There are four teams that graduated from our The Other 25 (teams #26 through #50). American Heritage (Plantation) becomes the fifth Florida team in the Top 25 at #21. The other newbies are Trinity (Kentucky) at #22, St. John’s College High School (Washington, D.C.) at #23 and Oklahoma’s Jenks at #24.
Aside from the Bosco/Gorman showdown, #13 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey), which travelled across the country to pick-up a win over Southern California’s Serra (Gardena), will play St. John’s in an all-Top 25 match-up.
