North Carolina will play its four state championships next week in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Friday night, sixteen teams battled for a trip to the state finals in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association East and West championship games.
In 4A, Grimsley, ranked No. 62 in the High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, advanced to North Carolina’s Kenan Memorial Stadium by beating defending 4A champ Weddington, who entered the game ranked No. 30 in the nation. The Whirlies trailed 10-0 at the half before storming back to win 35-23.
In next Friday’s title game at UNC, Grimsley will face No. 84 Rolesville, who Friday night beat No. 108 Cardinal Gibbons 38-31. The outcome reversed the September 13 regular season outcome when Gibbons beat theh Rams 30-27 in overtime.
In Saturday’s 3A title game, Seventy-First will play West Charlotte at N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium.
Seventy-First is looking to change last year’s silver medal for gold. The Falcons will try to do that against the team that beat defending champ Hickory Friday night in the semis. West Charlotte beat Hickory 36-20.

Monroe is heading to a state championship game since 2015 after beating Brevard 41-15. In next Saturday’s 2A final, the Redhawks will face East champ Northeastern, who are a perfect 15-0 this year.
The 2A state championship will wrap up the season on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
In 1A, Tarboro will play Corvian Community at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. It’s Tarboro’s eighth straight state championship game, which ties the Vikings with Independence, which played in eight straight from 2000 through 2007.
Tarboro is 4-3 during the current streak. Overall, the Vikings own eight state championship trophies.
