Mater Dei can wrap-up its second straight High School Football America 300 national championship, powered by NFL Play Football, Saturday when it plays No. 25 De La Salle for California’s Open Division championship on Saturday. This will be the third time that the Monarchs play the Northern California power with the national title on the line.
When Mater Dei won back-to-back national crowns in 2017 and 2018, the Monarchs beat the Spartans to clinch the championship. They won 52-21 in 2017 and 35-21 in the 2018 Open Division title game.
This is the tenth year that the California Interscholastic Federation has played an Open Division title game. Mater Dei is a perfect 4-0 in the state’s largest classification. DLS has lost four straight, since winning the first title back in 2015.
Waiting in the wings, if Mater Dei slips up, are No. 2 Milton (Georgia), No. 4 Duncanville (Texas) and North 6 North Shore (Texas). MD has already beaten No. 3 Bishop Gorman.
Next Tuesday (December 17), Milton will play No. 50 Langston Hughes for the Georgia 5A state championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons. The Eagles, who won last year’s Georgia 7A state championship, bring a 24-game win streak into the state championship game.
Duncanville is going after its third straight Texas Class 6A Division I championship. The Panthers will play No. 16 North Crowley Saturday at Allen’s Eagle Stadium. On the other side of the bracket, North Shore will square-off with No. 32 Westlake.
Duncanville and North Shore have played for the 6A-I state title over the last three years.
As far as the latest rankings, Georgia’s Carrolton moves up a notch to No. 8 this week. The Trojans will play No. 33 Grayson for the state’s 6A state championship.
Florida’s Venice also moves up one spot this week. The No. 11 Indians will play No. 87 Lake Mary for Florida’s 7A state championship on Saturday.
Three other Florida Top 25 teams will play for state crowns.
The 5A title game between No. 14 Lakeland and No. 26 St. Thomas Aquinas will end a championship streak for one of the two. STA has won a record five straight Florida high school football championships. Lakeland has won back-to-back state titles.
In 4A, No. 24 American Heritage (Plantation) will be looking for sixth overall state championship when it plays No. 27 Jones (Orlando). The Fighting Tigers are looking for their second state championship.
No. 15 Chaminade-Madonna is seeking a four-peat. The Lions will play No. 42 Clearwater Central Catholic for the 1A title. It will be the third year in a row that these two have played for the state title.
