Points-a-Plenty in Week 6 SoCal Top 25

Four teams in the High School Football America Southern California Top 25 scored 70 points or more Friday night as league play open across most of the CIF Southern Section.  In addition, three teams scored 60 points or more.  Our top three teams — #1 Mater Dei, #2 St. John Bosco and #3 Corona Centennial — were in that group of seven.

Mater Dei (6-0, 1-o Trinity) opened Trinity League play by beating #9 Santa Margarita (4-2, 0-1 Trinity) 62-14.  The Monarchs ran-out to a 56-0 halftime lead behind seven touchdown passes by sophomore J.T. Daniels to four different receivers.

St. John Bosco (5-1, 1-o Trinity League) crushed #11 Servite (4-2, 0-1 Trinity) 70-6, which extended the Braves’ record Trinity League win streak to 22 straight for the four-time defending champs.  According to the Press-Telegram, junior QB Re-al Mitchell was 10-for-12 for 151 yards and three touchdowns, plus he ran for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Corona Centennial roared to a 77-20 win over Roosevelt (Eastvale) behind junior quarterback Tanner McKee, who suffered a concussion a couple of weeks ago.  According to the Press-Enterprise, McKee ran for 243 yards for three touchdowns and rushed for two TD’s on 81 yards on the ground.  Miles Reed ran for 229 yards and four scores for the Huskies, who improved to 5-1 and 1-0 in the Big VIII.

The thriller of the night was at Orange Coast College where #13 Orange Lutheran (4-2, 1-0 Trinity) beat #7 JSerra (4-2, 0-1 Trinity) 30-29 in overtime in the Trinity League opener for both.  OLu won by stopping JSerra’s two-point conversion attempt.

In another all-Top 25 battle, #23 Murrieta Valley (4-2, 1-0 Southwestern) took-down #8 Vista Murrieta 42-37, snapping the Broncos’ 35 game Southwestern League win streak.  Lika Palmer, who’s verbally committed to Coloradoran for 178 yards and three second half touchdowns.

Vista Murrieta (4-2, 0-1 Southwestern) was hurt by four turnovers.

#4 Mission Viejo ran its win streak to 35 straight with a 41-0 shutout of Tesoro to open South Coast League play.  Colin Schooler ran for 204 yards and four touchdowns, according to OCVarsity.

#5 Narbonne scored the most points in the area Friday night in a 78-0 win over Gardena.

#6 Rancho Cucamonga took the lead in the Baseline League with an impressive 47-10 win over Upland.  Oregon-commit Jaylon Redd scored five touchdowns to push the Cougars to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in Baseline League.

#10 Bishop Amat improved to 2-1 in Mission League play by beating Crespi 38-17 .  Next week, the Lancers will square-off with league leader Serra.  The Cavaliers (4-3) won their fourth straight Friday night beating Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 38-7.

Friday night, the Cavs had a special fan, as former Serra star and current Jacksonville Jaguar Marqise Lee was at the game.

#12 La Mirada improved to 5-2 overall with a 66-15 rout of Artesia in Suburban League play.  Tristan Meyer threw seven TD passes in the win.

The fourth team to top 70 points was #14 Long Beach Poly in a 70-0 win over Compton.  Poly is now 3-0 in Moore League play, having outscored league opponents 179-7.

#16, Edison,#17 Charter Oak, #18 Oaks Christian, #19 Calabasas, #20 Chaminade, #21 Heritage, #22 Cathedral and #24 St. Bonaventure all picked-up wins this weekend.
