Central High School’s football field is named after Ray Laing, who coached Central High School to its only high school football state championships in 1969 and 1972. Both years, the Bobcats finished a perfect 13-0.

Central beat St. Mary’s of Phoenix 14-7 for the 1969 Big Schools championship. St. Mary’s was looking for its third straight state title.

In ’72, Central beat Brophy Prep 21-0.

Laing coached high school football in some capacity for over 50 years and was inducted into the first class of the  Phoenix Union High School District Sports Hall of Fame.
