New Jersey is one step away from separating public and non-public schools in high school football.
According to NJ.com, the executive committee of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has endorsed a proposal that would separate public and non-public schools in football for the 2016-17 school year and beyond. The proposal would also separate the two when it comes to the state’s individual state wrestling championships.
The proposal will now go before the NJSIAA’s general membership in December for final approval
There are 36 non-public schools in New Jersey. All would be moved into a three-tiered conference.
In addition to the separation of public and private schools, the committee also endorsed a rule that would require varsity athletes who transfer to or from a non-public or choice school to sit the first 30 days of the season and be banned from the state tournament.
