Everyone knows that rivalry games change everything. Friday night, No. 25 Maryville saw its national ranking shredded by Alcoa in a 34-28 upset in the 90th edition of the game.
The Rebels, a 6A school, entered the game as the top team in the High School Football America Tennessee Top 10, while Alcoa, a 3A school, was ranked No. 8. The Tornadoes hadn’t beaten Maryville since 2010.

Alcoa quarterback Walker Russell led the way with three touchdown passes for the state’s three-time defending 3A champs who won their 16th state title last season. Maryville also won its 16th state title last year, which ties them with their rivals for the most all-time in Tennessee.
