It’s been an Arizona State-type offseason for the Saguaro High School football program.
In December, longtime head coach Jason Mohns resigned to take an assistant coaching job at Arizona State. Wednesday, the Scottsdale school introduced former Arizona State offensive coordinator Zak Hill as the Sabercats new head coach.
The last time Hill was a high school coach was in 2008 at Hillsboro High in Oregon. In his one season as the program’s head coach, he led Hillsboro to a 6-5 record and a playoff berth.

Hill has some big shoes to fill. Mohns led Saguaro to seven state championships in 11 years, including the 2021 Arizona Open Division title.
Along with the championships, Saguaro has been a regular in the High School Football American national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football. Last season, after finishing runner-up in the Open Division, the Sabercats were ranked No. 44 in the HSFA 300.
Saguaro has finished in the Top 100 seven years in a row with an average ranking of No. 48.
