Iconic Fenway Park will host four traditional Thanksgiving high school football games on November 26 and 27. The home of the Boston Red Sox will host two doubleheaders, starting with the Island Cup matchup between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket on November 26.
This will be the 44th Island Cup, but the first time the island schools will play in a Major League Baseball stadium. Nantucket brings a two-game win streak in the series into the game.
In the November 26 nightcap, Stoneham plays Reading. The first game between these two was played in 1899. They’ve played the game on Thanksgiving since 1923. Stoneham has won the last two, but still trails in the series 70-33-7.
The next day, Lawrence will play Central Catholic, followed by Swampscott and Marblehead.
Fenway Park first hosted high school football shortly after its opening in 1912, when city rivals Boston Latin and English played their annual Thanksgiving Day game at the ballpark. Two days later, the ballpark hosted the 1912 high school football national championship game when Everett was defeated by Oak Park, IL. The last high school football game to be played at Fenway Park during the last century was held in 1935, followed by an 80-year absence until its return in 2015.
