The Georgia High School Association met Thursday to begin the journey of reclassifying schools for the 2024 and 2025 high school football seasons when the state goes from from seven to six classes. In April 2022, the GHSA voted Class 7A, the state’s largest classification, be eliminated at the start of the 2024-25 sports year, leaving the state with 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A Division I and 1A Division II.
While the state’s governing body won’t get enrollment figures until October of November, the GHSA reclassification committee began its process by acting on the 3.0 out-of-zone enrollment multiplier. The committee unanimously approved using the multiplier for ’24 and ’25. In addition, according to meeting minutes, a student who has attended a feeder school to a member high school since fifth grade will no longer count as out-of-zone.
Once enrollment numbers are received, the GHSA will place 64 schools in 6A and 60 schools each in the rest of the classes. Under the Current alignment, 7A only has 46 schools.
It should be noted that any decisions made by the reclassification committee are only proposals and will ultimately have to be ratified by the full State Executive Committee.
