Mission Viejo High School (CA) is coming-off the school’s first-ever state football championship last year, and when the Diablos take the field Friday night against Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), the players will have a uniform wardrobe fitting a state champ. Earlier this week, the team used a YouTube video to unveil its 2016 look that features 28 uniform and helmet combinations.
“This is great for the kids,” said Bob Johnson, who has over 300 career wins as a head coach. “We have really enjoyed our ten year relationship with Under Armour and they have done a great job on these uniforms.”
Mission Viejo receivers Coach Garrett Gray worked with Coach Johnson and Under Armour representatives to come-up the multiple looks. The Diablos are part of Under Armour’s Undeniable campaign.
“We did this for the kids,” said Gray. “It’s going to give them something special that they can put on their social media. What’s really great is the kids will choose the uniform combination they want to wear each week. The goal is to not re-use a combo.”
Gray said that each player has a copy of the different variations of uniforms and they will vote on their favorite. The winning uniform will be unveiled to the team in the locker room before Thursday’s practice with an Under Armour mannequin that is decked-out in the team’s choice.
After Johnson and Gray finalized their choices, they chose 15 players, including Colin Schooler (No. 7), a member of USA TODAY’s Preseason All-USA Defense, to don the uniforms for a photo shoot that is in a Star Wars/Darth Vader-style. Those pics were then turned into the above video.
In addition to Schooler, who’s brother Brenden is in his freshman year at Oregon, the Diablos featured Olijah Griffin (No. 2, WR/DB), Matt McDonald (No. 3, QB), Michael Gazi (No. 4, LB/RB), Christian Lavalle (No. 5, LB/TE), Chris Mitchell (No. 17, DB), Austin Osborne (No. 18, WR),Leo Tamba (No. 28 DL), Cade Covarrubias (No. 31, S), Jack Munch (No. 50, DT), Chuck Redman (No. 51, OG), AJ Knight (No. 53, DL), Kannoah Tanuvasa (No. 55, DL/OG), Cedric Tufaga (No. 72, T) and Jarrett Patterson (No. 78, OL).
