Now that we’re a month into the season, the High School Football America proprietary algorithm is doing what it does best, compare on-field results, which results in our Top 100. And, with so many great head-to-head match-ups within the Top 100 so far, we’re now getting a clear picture of what the national championship chase now looks like.
Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California) remains the top team in the nation this week and the Monarchs strengthened their hold on the top spot with an impressive 62-14 crushing of former No. 34 Bergen Catholic from New Jersey Saturday night at the Under Armour Brothers in Arms Classic at Mission Viejo, California.
Mater Dei now owns wins over Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada) and BC, which were highly-ranked at the time of the games. Looming on the horizon is the October 13th showdown with No. 6 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, California), which should decide the Trinity League championship. Beyond that, Mater Dei could face several Top 100 teams in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. Bottom line, right now, the Monarchs control their own destiny, but we have a long way to go between now and mid-December.
Speaking of St. John Bosco, the Braves will take another trip to the east this week. Bosco will take-on No. 17 St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. SJB’s only loss this year was in overtime to No. 5 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) in the Braves’ season opener.

St. John’s has an impressive resume with a win over former No. 7 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey) and a narrow road-loss to nationally-ranked De La Salle (Concord, California).
De La Salle falls from No. 11 to No. 16 this week after losing 34-7 to No. 15 Bishop Gorman Saturday night. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Gorman, which had won 55 straight games prior to its loss to Mater Dei.
Counting the Bosco/St. John’s game there are seven Top 100 match-ups this week.
In Florida, No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida) will take-on No. 11 Miami Central (Florida). IMG hasn’t played since September 2nd when it beat nationally-ranked Corona Centennial (California). The Ascenders last two match-ups against No. 27 St. Frances Academy (Maryland) and St. John’s have been cancelled because of Hurricane Irma. The storm led to Central being stranded in Las Vegas after beating Bishop Gorman on September 8.
The other Top 100 match-ups this week are — No. 43 DePaul Catholic (New Jersey) playing No. 82 Don Bosco Prep (New Jersey), No. 45 Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) facing No. 56 Bergen Catholic (New Jersey), No. 50 Northwestern (Miami, Florida) playing No. 75 Miami Booker T. Washington, No. 91 Saint Louis (Hawaii) is hosting No. 92 Narbonne (California) and No. 95 Lawrence Central (Indiana) plays No. 99 Center Grove (Indiana).
