The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association is officially moving toward sanctioning girls’ flag football as a varsity sport. The first step is for the NJSIAA to launch girls’ flag as a pilot sport for the next two springs.
Over the last three years, with the help of the National Football League’s New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, girls’ high school flag football has flourished as a club sport in the Garden State. About 100 schools across the state had flag teams this past spring.

In June, Ridgewood beat Hillside 47-6 to win the New Jersey Flag State Football Championship. The championship game was played at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center.
In the southern part of the state, the Eagles were involved with the Shore Conference Flag Football League that had 14 teams in the spring. The league began in 2021 with eight teams.
Rumson-Fair Haven beat Middletown South 26-13 in June for the league title.
Currently eight states — Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and New York — have officially sanctioned the sport.
