After 40 straight wins and four straight Virginia high school football state championships, Highland Springs’ streak came to an end in the second round of the Class 5 high school football playoffs with a 27-21 loss to Varina. The Springers had spent the entire season at the top of the High School Football America Virginia Top 10 and No. 63 in our national rankings.
Manchester takes-over the No. 1 spot with Highland Springs dropping to No. 9 in this week’s statewide rankings. This week, Manchester will face Varina.
South County, which will play in the Class 6 quarterfinals this week against Lake Braddock, moves into the Top 10 at No. 10, replacing No. 6 Freedom, which lost to Massaponax 45-52 in the Class 6 second round.
