The WPIAL has announced that only four of its six high school football championships will be played at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, this year.
WPIAL officials saysthe the 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A championships will be played on November 18th at the the NFL facility, while the 2A and 1A title games will be a week later at a site to be determined.
Since 1986, the WPIAL has played all of its championship games on one day at either Heinz or Three Rivers Stadium, but that was when the state only had four classifications. Last year, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association expanded its football playoffs from four to six classes.
WPIAL officials have also announced that 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A will have eight playoff teams, while 2A and 1A will have 16 teams.
