Tonight’s showdown between #20 Warren Central (8-0, 7-0) and #24 Carmel (8-0, 6-0) may only be Part 1 for the 2014 season. That’s because these two powers could easily meet again in the postseason like last year when Warren Central beat Carmel 7-6 for the Indiana 6A state championship. That victory at Lucas Oil Stadium in November came after the Warriors lost to Carmel 21-15 in October of 2013.
At stake tonight is the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship, and don’t expect either team to romp since the last ten games between the two have been decided by 10 points or less with three games going into overtime.
Since 2009, the two teams have played nine games with Warren Central holding a 5-4 edge. Carmel enters the game ranked #1 in the state in the latest Associated Press rankings, Warren Central is #2. It’s the fourth time that the two have been ranked 1-2 at game time.
Warren Central brings a 14-game win streak into the contest. Between the two, they’ve won eight of the last 11 Indiana large-school state titles with Warren Central capturing six of them.
