It was the Zack Fox show.

Fox, an all-star from Nanticoke Area High School, rushed for 144 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He had an 87-yard kickoff return to lead the Miners over the Pioneers 42-6, Saturday night in the 73rd Annual UNICO All-Star Football Classic.

Fox also had an interception right before halftime and was later named the George Curry MVP for his performance Saturday night. Fox plans to play football at Lackawanna College this fall.

The story of the first half was the rushing attack of Fox, Hazleton Area’s Brady Mizenko and Wilkes-Barre’s Howie Shiner. The trio combined rushing was 286 yards.

The Miners ate up most of the time in the first quarter. The 15-play drive was capped off by quarterback Drew DeLucca of Pittston Area who dove into the end zone for the first score of the game.

Fox scored the next two touchdowns for the Miners with runs of 18 and 44 yards.

The defensive play of the night came from Hazleton Area’s Peter Youngcourt. Berwick’s quarterback Ethan Lear fumbled the ball on the sack. Youngcourt scooped up the fumble and dove into the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown. Shiner caught a two-point conversion pass from DeLucca.
At halftime the Miners led 26-0.

The Pioneers’ offense finally got going on the first possession of the second half. Isaiah Cobb from Wyoming Valley West had runs of 12, 17 and 10, setting up his one-yard touchdown run.

Cobb led the Pioneers rushing last night. He finished with 77 yards.

The Pioneers didn’t have much time to celebrate the touchdown. Fox took the kickoff and went 87 yards down the sideline for the score.

They knew it was coming,” said Fox. “I have really good vision. I wait and see an opening and go. I saw it and took off.”

Shiner finished the night for the Miners with a five-yard touchdown run.
