Smithson Valley head coach Larry Hill can now add Texas high school football champion to his resume.

The ninth all-time winningest coach in Texas high school football history won his first state championship Saturday when his Rangers beat Highland Park 32-20 in the Class 5A Division I title game at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Prior to Saturday’s win of HP, ranked No. 101 High School Football America 300 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football, Hill was 0-4 in state championship games.

On the field, Smithson Valley used a strong running game to capture the school’s first-ever state title. The Rangers out-rushed Highland Park 297-to-49.

SV quarterback Cade Spradling’s second quarter TD pass Brody Day gave the Rangers their first lead at 20-14.

Hill’s overall record now stands at 315-89 over 32 seasons.

Both teams finish with 14-2 records.
