I have many favorite nicknames in high school football, but one of my favorites is the Sparkplugs of Speedway High School, which is only a mile-and-a-half away from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Speedway was founded in 1912 as a residential suburb of Indianapolis, taking its name from the famous Yard of Bricks that hosts the Greatest Spectacle in Racing every Memorial Day weekend.
The Sparkplugs, who play in Indiana’s 2A classification, have never won a state high school football championship, but they have captured three regional titles and nine sectional championships.
