The streak is over. Friday night, Watertown edged Pierre T.F. Riggs 14-13 in the 11AA title game, ending the Governors run of seven straight South Dakota high school football state championships.
The game came down to a two-point conversion attempt that would have given Riggs eight straight state championships.
Elijah Boutchee scored on a six-yard run with :50 to go in the game that closed the Watertown lead to 14-13. The Governors gave it to Boutchee again for the two-point try, but the Arrows were equal to the task.
The championship is the first for Watertown since 2001.
