There are several big storylines headlining the 2022 season. The biggest will be in Alcoa where the Tornadoes begin life after Gary Rankin, the state’s all-time winningest coach. Rankin resigned at the end of the season after leading the school to its seventh straight state title. That’s the longest active state championship streak in America.
Defensive coordinator Brian Nix was immediately elevated to the school’s new head coach.
Rankin’s retirement didn’t last long. He was hired by Boyd Buchanan School in Chattanooga. Rankin heads into the 2022 season tied for eighth on America’s all-time coaching wins list with 466 victories against only 78 losses.

Chattanooga’s McCallie School is also on a roll. The Blue Tornado will be going after a fourth straight Division II-AAA state title. Last year’s title helped the program finish No. 36 in the High School Football America 100 national rankings, powered by NFL Play Football.
